Abstract

Islam gives due importance to knowledge, that is why the basic tools of knowledge such as pen, book and the ink have been mentioned in the Holy Quran. Due to this usefulness, the scholars of almost every age have left behind an extra-ordinary and large quantity of manuscripts. Manuscript is the written form of a book prepared with one’s own handwriting. In the early ages of Muslim legacy the almost asset of knowledge existed in form of manuscripts. The libraries were abundantly stocked with these. The service of experts was used to prepare the manuscript. From the sub-continent, a huge amount of manuscripts were transferred to Europe which the poet of the east, Allama Muhammad Iqbal has described with deep sorrow in his poetry. In the article under reference, the significance of manuscripts in Islamic Literature has been discussed.
