Women recreation in the Light of Al-Sīrah Al Nabaviah

Abstract

Entertainment is a natural thing; therefore, its concept is found in every era and in every nation. Every nation entertains according to its religious and cultural values.

Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him emphasized on women rights, and became the most robust voice for women rights in the history of human beings. As women entered into circle of Islam, they began to enjoy such rights and privileges that were beyond imagination in Jahiliyah. Islam allows women to have recreational activities just like men. And there are certain limits for both men and women.

The life of Prophet with his wives is ideal for us. He used to sit with his wives, have them with him in traveling, have race with them, make humor and give them opportunities for entertainment being within certain Islamic principles. He assisted his wives in watching men's sports tricks, and even competed in running with them to entertain them. He has forbade who wanted to stop the young girls from playing the tambourine (a famous ancient Arabic music instrument) on happy occasions.This article analyze recreational rights and conditions for women in the light of Al-Sira Al Nabviya. It will answer that what was the state of such activities in the society to that Prophet were sent? What was Prophet’s behavior with his wives in this regard? Did wives of Prophet have opportunities for outing and enjoyment and what was its nature?
